The Ship: Henry Reed

In January 1855, one-hundred seven passengers boarded the Henry Reed in Antwerp, Belgium.  Captained by George A. Dearborn, the ship left the Port of Antwerp on January 14, 1855, beginning a journey across the Atlantic.  

They arrived at the Port of New York on Friday, February 9, 1855.  

The New York Daily Times reported the ships arrival in its February 10th edition:  "New-York, Friday, Feb. 9 - Arrived - Ship Henry Reed.  (of Hallowell,) Dearborn. Antwerp 23 ds., with mdse. and 107 passengers to W.F. Schmidt & Co.  Experienced heavy weather W. of the Banks. Jan. 28, lat. 45 lon. 46, saw a large ship steering E, apparently new, showing a white signal with a black cross and 4 letters, one in each corner, and 3 letters at the bottom.  The H. R. was anchored at Quarantine last night."

The Manifest of Passengers was filed by Captain Dearborn with the Collector of the Customs for the City of New York on February 10th, 1855.

The vessel was sailing for NY shipping agents W.F. Schmidt & Co. and sailed the "S Line" on regular service between Antwerp and New York.  It's tonnage was 850 ton.






Only one family from Scherzheim traveled on the Henry Reed.
